🇩🇪 German (PDF) | 🇬🇧 English (PDF)

Step-by-step: Spray chrome plating

1) Preparation

  • Clean/degrease the surface and keep it dust-free.
  • Mask and ventilate the work area
  • PPE: Gloves, safety glasses/visor, respiratory protection
  • Apply the base coat carefully according to the instructions.

2) Activate & Metallize

  • Apply activator according to instructions.
  • Spray the metallization sequence evenly.
  • Interim checks for shine/cleanliness

3) Rinsing & Sealing

  • Rinse off residues with a suitable medium.
  • Apply preservative varnish according to the data sheet.
  • Let it dry
  • Then apply the protective varnish (clear varnish).

4) Quality check

  • Check the optics (mirror finish, uniformity).
  • Refer to the list of potential sources of error if necessary.
  • Documentation of the parameters

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What advantages does spray chrome plating offer compared to conventional chrome plating?

High design freedom for complex geometries, thin layers, reproducible appearance (chrome look) without an electroplating bath. Ideal for prototypes, small production runs and refurbishment.

Which surfaces are suitable?

Typical substrates: plastics (ABS, PC, PP after pretreatment), metals, glass, ceramics. Please check critical substrates in advance with the application engineer.

How do I avoid typical mistakes (clouds, tears, dull spots)?

Maintain constant distances and spray speed, ensure homogeneous overlaps, and keep environmental conditions (dust/humidity/temperature) stable. Details: Sources of error (DE) .

Do I need a clear/protective varnish?

Yes, the protective lacquer protects the metallized layer from abrasion, chemicals and UV radiation. See: CLC TM (DE) .

What security measures are necessary?

Personal protective equipment (PPE) (gloves, safety glasses/visor, respiratory protection if necessary), ventilation, fire protection, storage according to the data sheet. Create operating instructions and provide training.

How long does the process take?

Depending on the geometry and layer structure, typically 30–90 minutes including drying. Refer to the instructions for exact times.

Is there a checklist for quality assurance?

Yes: Before/after photos, adhesion test, gloss level, layer structure, environmental parameters. Document values – compare deviations with the list of possible causes.

Where can I find all the documents collected together?

In the download section of this page: operating instructions , procedure description , sources of error , preservative varnish .
